Frontier:First Encounters
(暂译《国界边境:首战》)

Frontier: First Encounters is the direct sequel to the 1993 release Frontier: Elite II. This installment arrived on the scene two years later after development by David Braben’s company, Frontier Developments. It was released by GameTek, Incorporated. Frontier: First Encounters, like its predecessor, was a hybrid of action, simulation and strategy in a futuristic science fiction setting. It is actually the third title in the series, the first of which was released in the middle eighties and was called, simply Elite. A final installment, Elite 4 was said to be in the makings, but it has gone unseen as of yet.

The game features quite a mixture of fighting alien races from various planets, as well as other military activities; trading to make money; and performing other diplomatic-like activities to earn respect and cash throughout the galaxy. One new element that is added to this installment of the game is the use of journals, which will reveal to the gamer various goings on throughout the galaxy, eliminating some of the guesswork, and improving the ability to strategize future moves and campaigns. The journal serves to create hand-coded missions and custom story lines that could include the user. These missions have some impact on the plot, itself. The basic militaristic missions within the game were randomly generated, but the campaigns based on the journal developments take the player through a linear plot sequence that adds depth and interest to the game. Other notable additions to this sequel include the completely redone cabin, now in striking three-dimensional graphics with more color and a more user friendly look and feel. There is texture mapping displayed in the cities on the planets, as well as on the ships themselves. This also gives the game a much more in-depth and realistic feel. The game also features many of the ships from previous games, as well as some interesting new ones. Throughout the game, the user will improve his or her combat rating, beginning with harmless and ending with Elite. There are many missions that will require a specific combat rating in order to be completed, or even embarked upon. Likewise, the user’s capabilities improve with combat ratings. In total, Frontier: First Encounter does a good job of building on what its predecessors had done. While it is not necessary to have played the first games for this one to make sense, it certainly helps reduce the learning curve in micromanagement. It is a nice game of conquest and battle with elements of strategy neatly mixed in. It is a good play, as are its predecessors.

Galactic Federation

Galactic Federation is a space combat simulation game, featuring battles that allow one hundred capital ships, fighters, and bombers to blast away and destroy each other at any one time. The game is built upon an in-house developed DirectX 9 engine that possesses a dynamic geometry damage model, allowing for spectacular ship destruction. Players will see debris fly off their enemies, weapon turrets explode, and ships cut into many tiny pieces. To accomplish this, players will be able to pilot over 20 types of fighters and bombers, and loadout with a plethora of different weapons from the available arsenal.

Galactic Command:Echo Squad

An episodic series in the Galactic Command franchise, Echo Squad is a series of aerial/space action combat titles based on the adventures of a group of Elite Force pilots assigned to the Excalibur carrier. Players can engage in combat with a full range of human pilots thanks to a multiplayer mode that supports up to sixteen players in a particular mission, battling across the cosmos in deathmatch and team deathmatch combat as well as co-op modes. Each episode has you commanding a different fighter wing.

Many years have passed since the Gammulans invaded, leaving civilization completely devastated. In their wake, they left a splintered Galactic Command (GALCOM) alliance still engaged in a fierce battle with insurgents who oppose the alliance. Stretched to the limit Galactic Command scientists developed a new space craft that is lighter, faster and more powerful than any before it...

Episode One begins with this new Engstrom class carrier's first day in a live combat engagement. The player's Echo fighter squadron of fighters has been assigned to the WildStar battle fleet led by the GCV-Excalibur in operations against the Insurgent uprising. As an Elite Force Pilot and leader of the Echo fighter wing assigned to IIS starstation in orbit around Titan, your fighter wing is tasked with leading a series of defensive and offensive missions against the Insurgents occupying Sol territories. Missions take place in space and on the surface of planets and range from basic escort and recon missions, to highly engaging and dangerous tactical strike missions.

Galactic Command:Talon Elite

The second title, GALCOM - TE, based on revised GALCOM game engines, features the adventures of an elite team of Elite Force Pilots operating deep behind enemy lines and against the viciously hostile Gammulan race.

Unlike Wildstar fleet in Echo Squad which sees the player’s squad operating within friendly territories and within reach of friendly bases and support, the Talon Elite fighter team and their Talon fleet (carriers, cruisers, armed transports) operate on their own deep inside hostile territory and nowhere near any other friendly forces. Left to their own devises, the Talon fleet operates outside the realms of normal GALCOM directives and do whatever they can to accomplish their goals.

Unlike the Insurgents engaged in conflicts on the home front, the Gammulans are expert combat fighters and one of the most formidable adversaries that Galactic Command has ever faced. Talon Elite is also episodic (sixteen missions per episode) and has an original four episode story arc. It is currently in development for the PC (retail and digital distribution).

Hyperspeed
(暂译《超速度》)

Hyperspeed is a space sim designed by Gunship 2000 and F-15 Strike Eagle III designer Andy Hollis. Together with its 1991 prequel, "Lightspeed", the game makes up a great space exploration adventure in the style of Elite.

Remarkable are the fluent animations of the ship and its unique depth of play.

Independence War

The Indies, colonists from Earth, and the Commonwealth are engaged in a never-ending war in Space. As an officer of the Commonwealth it's your job to strip these rebels of their defiant natures and force them to re-join with Earth.

I-War is a space-sim with a twist. Instead of flying the usual fighters, you take charge of a 150-metre long Dreadnaught-class corvette. And all the goodies of a capital ship are included: big guns, big shields, lots of missiles. All the daily essentials for an officer of the Navy. The manual explains all functions of the ship. Whether weapons, engines, tactics, tips & tricks.

The mission time varies from 5 minutes up to 35 minutes without save point. 35 Minutes if you play the complete Mission Corectly about 100 % within reach. If you have successfully completed the mission, the game will save. There are primary and secondary missions and, later in the game, you can change the sides from the Navy to the Indies. Later, the Dreadnaught become updated with more firepower, new missiles and a friend.

Independence War Deluxe

This title is a compilation of Independence War and its expansion pack Independence War Defiance. In Independence War, there is a huge conflict going on between The Indies, colonists from Earth, and the Commonwealth. And you take the role of an officer in the Commonwealth fleet.

In Defiance you are playing the Indie Side of the conflict. The add-on consists of 18 missions and it mirrors the original campaign. You are Edison Hayes, a captain of the Indie fleet and the Dreadnaught-class corvette Spartacus. Defiance also adds two notable new features to the game; ability to save in-mission and limited customization of player ship's weapons.

Independence War Defiance was designed to be an add-on pack but made its way into this bundle instead.

Independence War 2:Edge Of Chaos

The Badlands cluster, a century after the first Independence War. You are the son of Felix, a miner who was killed by Caleb Maas (owner of the Maas corporation) for not paying a debt. With the help of a long-dead man's mind trapped inside a computer, you have a chance of revenge. With your own base full of space for cargo, and your grandmother's ship, you start an adventure which will change your life... forever.

There are 16 star systems, and you get to fly 4 ships. Whilst in the first game your job was largely restricted to shooting things, here you can also trade with people or steal their goods. Ships are large and require precise control.

This sequel's user interface has been redesigned from the original, with the aim of simplifying the controls, and has a new graphics engine. There is online multiplayer support for up to 8 people (Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and The Bomb), realistic physics and many more changes.

Lander
《登陆者》

The year is 3032. You own a hovercraft type spacecraft and earn your living by piloting it around the solar system, hired by large corporations and other entities to perform various tasks for a price. The more difficult, risky or illegal the mission, the higher the pay off.

Lander is a small, lightweight, maneuverable machine designed for tight above and below ground flying, controlled through a set of thrusters on the corners and a single main engine on its belly. With the money you earn, make needed repairs or improve Lander with better weapons, engines, armor – or even replace it entirely. There are five grades of armor, four pulse energy weapons, three missile systems and four engines available when you have enough cash to purchase them.

In order to succeed, you must master intricate flight dynamics. Learn to maneuver your Lander through a series of traps and other obstacles, all the while handling gravity, wind, and other atmospheric interferences.

There are 30 increasingly difficult, non-linear single missions covering 15 different planets and moons. In the early stages of the game, they involve finding and retrieving objects with your tractor beam, searching and destroying a specific target or stealing an important object. Later operations take on a covert military flair, some of which are puzzle based, and you find that other factions are determined to stop you at all costs.

Two multiplayer levels support deathmatch play over IPX or TCP/IP internet connection. CD-Rom and DVD versions were shipped in the same package. The DVD version (Psygnosis’ first release in that format) boasts high-resolution MPEG 2 video sequences and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. The PC version offers Dolby Surround Sound and MPEG 1 video (in shorter length) on a single CD-Rom.

Lightspeed

In the future, the Earth is a wasteland, unable to sustain human life any longer. Mankind's only hope is to find a new world to colonize. Giant transport ships are launched, each carrying 10 million people. Sent ahead of each of these ships is a Trailblazer-class scout. Controlling one of these Trailblazers, it's the players mission to find a suitable planet for a new colony, to scout for natural resources and to deal with various alien species, who might be both friend or foe.

From a robot-controlled home base, the Trailblazer starts exploring the nearby star systems (two different star clusters are selectable, representing different difficulty levels). Planets in uninhabited systems can be claimed for their natural resources. If aliens already inhabit a system, diplomatic negotiations can be opened. Since the resources of the uninhabited systems won't be enough for sustaining a colony, trade agreements with the aliens are necessary. Each alien species has its own attitude and quirks. Not all of them are friendly, and some might demand that the player attacks their enemies before they agree to trading or a peace treaty.

If hostilities with aliens begin, there are a variety of combat options. The Trailblazer itself is rather slow and sluggish, but is equipped with a powerful main gun and a gun turret. It can also launch remote-controlled combat chassis in various configurations: as a guided missile, a kamikaze ship, or a fighter, the latter two being controllable by the player.

The systems of the Trailblazer (the weapons, shields, sub- and faster-than-light engines) are powered by various parts. On the engine room screen, these parts can be individually mounted or removed. Combat may damage the parts. The same parts are used by different systems of the ship, so they can be moved around to improve one system at the expense of another. New and replacement parts can be collected from the wreckage of destroyed alien ships and space stations, or be acquired through trading.

Line Wars
(暂译:《线上战争》)

Cobra Mark IV multi-purpose General Contact Vehicle is an astonishing stellar vehicle. It's got beam lasers mounted up front and at the rear and is loaded with missile launchers. It's highly maneuverable and quick to react you your every move. Naturally a fighter like this will give you a great advantage. Unfortunately your opponent is flying the exact same thing. Quick reactions will determine the outcome of this duel in outer-space involving up to four opponents. Be careful of other ships flying about and mind those asteroids.

LineWars is an space-fighter sim that takes place in the far reaches of another galaxy. You control your ship via mouse or keyboard from a first person perspective. By using the number keys you can look around the different viewpoints of your ship and of course will have to do so to mount those rear beams. Your weapons are the aforementioned laser beams and missiles. The missiles only fire when locked on a target but the lasers can be used to blast meteors, passing law-abiding space ships and just to waste your energy. Your energy (shields) and lasers have a limited gauge. Once the gauge lowers to zero for your lasers you will have to wait a few seconds for them to refill. This naturally doesn't apply to your energy. Once those babies come down it's just a few inches of hull between you and oblivion. Missiles are limited to four shots but there is the off chance that your missile launcher will jam at which point you must engage in battle without them.

The game receives it's name not from the linear polygonal graphics but from fighting "on-line". That is, phone line. Multi-player battles can be fought via modem between four players but there's always the computer if friends are lacking. Settings of the game are adjustable in that you can select friction and speed at which you react and the number of opponents fighting.

3-D space shooter a la Wing Commander but on shareware. You are some sort of space marshal/cop, and have to complete 10 scenarios (with 10 goals each) of missions that range from asteroid blasting, to pirate elimination, patrols, escorting ships, etc.

The game uses a polygon-based engine, with graphics that put the emphasis on line-drawing and very radical lightsourcing as a way to convey the lack of visibility on space thanks to pockets of darkness created by asteroids, etc. This makes for less dogfighting and more hunting-like action as the main gameplay objective.

这是一款类似《银河飞将》的3D太空射击游戏,只不过这是一个共享软件。你扮演的角色接近于一名空军元帅或是太空警察,需要完成10个任务关(每一关都包含10个任务目标)的内容,其中包括从炸毁小行星带到消灭海盗、巡逻、护送别的飞船等等任务。

Orbiter
《轨道飞行》

Orbiter is a freeware space simulator coded by the British professor Dr. Martin Schweiger, having been in development since 2000. The Orbiter community usually receives two new releases of the program a year; the first is the yearly update with numerous changes, and then usually a patch or two is released a few months later to fix bugs and to introduce additional changes to the program.

Orbiter one of the most realistic space simulators ever released to the public, utilizing a very accurate and robust Newtonian physics model for in-game flight. Players can fly in the Space Shuttle or in more futuristic craft, dock with the International Space Station or program a flight to nearly all of the planets and many of the moons within the solar system. Many helpful MFD (multi-function display) programs come with Orbiter to help you maneuver through space, and they can be configured in a pre-startup game configuration window so that you may pick and choose which ones you wish to use in-game. You may also start a scenario or saved game from this pre-launch dialogue, or make numerous other changes to to the program.

All of these features are visually represented through a graphics engine which is able to keep up with the sophisticated physics system running in the background while still being able to produce intimidating sights - from small asteroids to the super massive planet Jupiter. The graphics engine can have its quality scaled in the aforementioned pre-startup game configuration window, so that it will run more easily on less robust systems.

Orbiter is also very flexible in terms of modifications. Several new ships, multi-function display programs and celestial bodies (including entire solar systems separate to our own) have been released thus far. You may also download super high-resolution textures for pre-existing planets, with upgrade packages increasing their resolution to as high as 32768 x 16384 for the more commonly visited bodies.

But make no mistake - ORBITER is not a space shooter. The emphasis is firmly on realism, and the learning curve can be steep. Be prepared to invest some time and effort to brush up on your orbital mechanics background. Good starting points are JPL's Basics of Space Flight, and R. Braeunig's Rocket & Space Technology.

Parkan II
《帕堪 2》

As the pilot of the Parkan, a former anti-pirate patrol cruiser, you are sent 17 years back in time to search for and prevent the reasons for an ongoing catastrophe which threatens the colonised space of the present. Your journey takes you deep into an almost unknown and war-torn region of space, now ruled by several clans of droids - and your only clues are a missing science ship and a strange anomaly found somewhere in that galaxy.

Parkan II is a mixture of space and first person action with a mission-driven and non-linear storyline. The game features several hundreds of solar systems with anything from one to ten individual planets per system, on which the player may land. Depending on the standing with the particular clan owning the planet, the player can trade, get news or missions from the base or even invading and conquering it in an FPS like way. The same applies to many ships you encounter on your travels between the planets.

While most of Parkan II's gameplay is based on action, simulation and roleplaying elements are also included. Your ship's as well as your battle suit's systems and weapons can be upgraded with better equipment and there are various combat drones to help you with fights on the ground or in space. As the interface and controls for your ship and suit are almost the same, the transition between both is almost seamless.

Privateer Gemini Gold

Privateer Gemini Gold is an open source recreation of Wing Commander: Privateer and its add-on Righteous Fire, originally developed by ORIGIN Systems. It does not yet support cutscenes and lip synchronization, but adds full 3D spaceflight based on the Vega Strike game engine.

Gemini Gold is a spin-off of the Privateer remake project code base and builds on improved resources with artwork and gameplay improvements. The goal is to provide a quality release of an OS independent high resolution Privateer game within the unique Wing Commander universe.

Unlike the Privateer remake, Gemini Gold has no fan-content like buyable capships and space communists, but adds overall GUI improvements, new models, textures and sprite graphics, it boasts overhauled game balance and interaction on bases, adds malfunction of ship systems when damaged, and includes more and optimized base animations, with a printer-friendly manual.
