MULTIPLAYER GENERAL INFORMATION
Star Wraith: Shadows of Orion features a versatile multiplayer system allowing players to join together from all over the world for action-packed 3D space combat. Gameplay is taken to a whole new level when real players are united in the game's universe. New elements of teamwork, strategy, and skill are introduced to the game through several custom environments and features that are only available in the multiplayer mode.
Battle Modes:
DOGFIGHT - Every player is on their own as the battle rages in this free-for-all mode. Each player in the game can target every other player making a game of 4 or more players a very intense combat situation. In this mode, it pays to use your multiple views and keep a close eye on your 3D radar so you can stay aware of the position and distance of every other player. Getting distracted in a dogfight can mean you will be an easy target for someone sneaking in behind you.
TEAM-VS-TEAM - In this mode, each player picks their squadron assignment between the green team and the red team. Players can keep track of their teammate's status using the wing display gauge on the HUD (as in the single player mode) and can even send secure text messages that can only be viewed by players on their own team. This mode lets you plan an attack, assist players, call for help, and a myriad of other options that bring a new element of strategy and gameplay to multiplayer.
COOPERATIVE BATTLE - This is where teamwork and strategy mean success in a battle mode where you join forces with other human players to battle against computer controlled fighters. The AI is much more challenging in this mode then in the single player mode. Enemy pilots fly faster, attack more aggressively, and use more weapons. A good mode to practice in to prepare for the other combat modes.
COOPERATIVE ASSAULT - This mode includes an enemy capital ship in the combat zone in addition to AI controlled fighters. The capital ship can repair its turret system in this mode, just as AI controlled fighters are able to use restores like human players, so teamwork is very important to score well in this mode. One player may want to be the squadron leader and direct attacks against the capital ship while other players engage the fighters.
Environments:
CLEAR - The classic 'no excuses' environment. Nothing to get in your way, nothing to run into, nothing to hide behind. Combat skill alone is what means success in this environment.
NEBULA CLOUDS - One of the most difficult environments to dogfight in. Visibility is reduced to almost nothing, illumination from counter-measures or other light sources can give your position away, and relying on your instruments is critical. A tactical challenge for even the most experienced starfighter ace.
ASTEROIDS - You must evade large rocks as you weave your way through the cluttered fields of asteroids being careful not to collide with any of them at high speed. Although, as any ace will tell you, intentionally colliding with an asteroid at moderate velocity can give you a quick reversal of speed, which if timed correctly, can allow you to get behind a target that's chasing you. Asteroids can also provide quick cover if you run out of counter-measures or are low on shield energy.
STATION - This environment provides a nice central location to use for hiding and sneak attacks. Several pockets of protection are available in this large space station. Heavily armored, this station also provides complete protection from even the most powerful missile types.
CAVE ARENA - This area changes all the rules. With several square miles of asteroid cave tunnels and walls, this environment requires players to get in closer to make attacks and prevents easy get-aways with jumpjets. With literally hundreds of places to hide, the cave arena mode provides a huge battlefield for even the largest multiplayer battles. This environment also features the added challenge of gun turrets in the cooperative mode.
PLANET - This mode places a planet nearby which you can use for cover if you're damaged and need time to repair. Flying close to the atmosphere at high speed can also add an extra measure of security as any enemy fighters risk damage if they get too close and start burning from the high heat. Remember to keep your distance, otherwise you may suffer the same fate. Enemy AI pilots can usually keep a safe distance, so this tactic is most effective against human players.
RELOAD AND RECHARGE STATION - In most environments, this station is available to all players. Simply fly into the station and come to a stop. Your weapons will be reloaded, shields recharged, countermeasures refilled, and all subsystems repaired. Watch your 6 when heading for this station as you will be an easy target as you slow down to enter it. The station's shields and armour will protect you from most attacks once you're inside, but an enemy fighter can still hit you from behind or in front of the station.

If you're not sure you are ready for multiplayer gameplay, contact us and we'll be happy to setup a training session for you. The multiplayer mode features several options to help bring new players into the game quickly, including 'restores' which allows players to rejoin a game right after they're destroyed. We want to encourage all registered players to use this mode as it is really one of the best ways to enjoy the game!
I also post dates and times of scheduled multiplayer games, as do other players, in the forum. To check for scheduled game times, head to the Star Wraith section of the forum.
