Igiss:
After a long wait that lasted for more than a year, Discovery Freelancer 4.85: Reunion finally comes online.
This wait was a very long one, and the testing stage for the new mod has lasted since the last Autumn. Since then, more than a hundred updates were released internally. So, if you expect problems with the new mod, you are right: problems are to be expected. But not as many as there were for old Discovery beta versions.
What's more, Cannon has provided an array of serverside tools to ensure smooth transition to the new version, and also programmed a mod updater that will allow all players to update the mod once serverside version is updated without restricting offline single-player games. Yet, if you are going to play on existing 4.84 servers, you are advised to keep a separate Freelancer installation for previous version(s).
We will update you with news on any updates, issues, and bugs that will be found throughout the beta testing. There have been a lot of rumors on spoiled balance and other things that we "spoiled" during 4.85 development. I admit that mistakes might have been made in certain areas, but we are still faithful to the old Freelancer gameplay basics, and nothing was changed just because we could change it.
Remember that this version is still a beta. And many things are expected to change. We'll have plenty of time to accomodate user feedback and eventually release a bug-free, stable, and balanced final version of 4.85: Reunion.
The complete change log for the new version is not ready yet. What you are presented now is a "beta version" of the changelog prepared by Jinx, with some precise statistics about the updated ships/systems by myself, to make the update look cool and worthy.
While transition, you will NOT have to re-buy any ships. Necessary changes to the ships will be made automatically.
Year is 817 A.S., and Sirius sector is on the brink of a global war. While Kusari pushes its onslaught against Bretonia deep into the Leeds system, Bretonia attemtps to surround Kusari forces in Tau-31. Liberty attacked Rheinland in Bremen and Hudson, and Rheinland has to pull back to defend its own borders. Discovery of a pathway into Gallia has added a new powerful player to the scene, and no one can tell what goals will the new House pursue in this troublesome time. Rumors arise that the nation of Gallia has been betrayed in the times of the exodus, making historians and politicians of various Houses search deep into archives to find out what truly happened more than 800 years ago in Sol.
If you prefer online play, you are welcome to official Discovery Freelancer RP 24/7 and PvP 24/7 servers, and a number of other servers running Discovery mod. Server operators are allowed to run this mod without any restrictions, IONCROSS data files are included.
In January 2007, Discovery mod was chosen to receive the Simulation Genre Award of ModDB.com's Mod of the Year-2006 contest (MOTY-2006).
