Space Exploration More Effective Under Private Sector?

NASA has been miffed for years now because of a relative decline in funding. And nowadays, with the onset of the recession and the financial problems we have reaped from that, funding for NASA is not likely to be high in the near future.

Some people are advocating that space exploration should be left to the private sector, who might actually do a better, faster job. A collaboration of different companies that launch satellites, revisit the moon, go to mars etc. and also send out deep space probes.

If private enterprise always does a better job than government, wouldn't it be better if space exploration was left to the private sector?
